Roger Seaman

Overview

Roger began mediating in 2002. His workplace mediation experience ranges from senior management to the ‘front office’ in the public and voluntary sectors, for example in local government, education, health services, fire service, police, unions and charities.  He provides conflict management skills training for organisations and has also worked as a trainer of mediators.

Roger’s mediation practice is rooted in a belief that the primary role of the mediator is to assist clients in listening attentively to each other. In this way each person may better explore what the other person has to say so that dialogue may emerge out of conflict. He has developed a practice that flexibly draws upon several different approaches to mediation and is ideally suited to helping people rebuild working relationships.

His book “Explorative Mediation at Work: The Importance of Dialogue for Mediation Practice” was published in 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan and is available from online bookshops.

Location

Roger is based near Poole on the south coast and practices across the south of England.

Professional background and experience

Roger worked as a commercial manager in a large corporation before moving to a consultancy providing organizational and technical expertise to overseas telecommunications companies. This work and corresponding organizational studies led him to realise that the most powerful management and consulting interventions are both facilitative and participatory. An ethic of ‘participation’ is realised in the practice of mediation where it is only the parties who can ultimately resolve their differences. The mediator’s skill lies in finding how best to support people in their efforts to resolve their conflict.

Voluntary work

Roger acts as secretary to his town’s Senior Forum Committee and volunteers as a community mediator and for his local Restorative Justice panel.

Personal

Roger is married and has a daughter at school. He enjoys walking in the Purbeck Hills and along the south coast.
